Vindicate Me, O Lord!

Do you find yourself wanting to silence your critics?

Are you insisting on fairness?

Do you want to defend yourself?
— ask your opponents to justify their charges?
— counter your opponents with steadfast denials?

Instead consider David’s cry —

Psalm 26:1-3
Vindicate me, O LORD, for I have walked in my integrity, and I have trusted in the LORD without wavering. Test me, O LORD, and try me, examine my heart and my mind; for your love is ever before me, and I walk continually in your truth.

Invite the Lord to test your integrity (innocence, uprigtness). Like David, desire to have your innermost soul searched and proved by the Lord. Trust in the Lord whole heartedly — to be the judge and set things right. Trust in the Lord’s sustaining grace and mercy; in the Lord’s unfailing love.

1 Peter 2:22-25
“He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Let go of what others say about you; entrust yourselves to Him who judges justly.

Psalm 51:6-7
Surely You desire truth in the inner parts;
… You teach me wisdom in the inmost place.
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
… wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Lord cleanse our hearts! Enable us to trust so confidently in Your unfailing love, Your justice, that we would not only live at peace with everyone — as far as possible — but would seek to bless our enemies. For vengeance belongs to You alone Lord and You will make things right.

Thank You Lord that as Your grace sustains us, we will be able to wait patiently for Your vindication. Thank You Lord that You are faithful!

Romans 12:17-21
Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “Vengeance is mine; I will repay,” says the Lord. On the contrary:
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
